Falmer is a small village and civil parish. It is part of the Lewes District of East Sussex in England. You can find this town between Brighton and Lewes where it is five miles away from the former. Despite its closeness to the city of Brighton and Hove, Falmer retains its charm and rural attractiveness.
The village is recorded in the Domesday Book as ‘Falemere’ which is a Saxon name. Two possible meanings for the name exist – one is Fala’s Mere, a pond belonging to Fala who may have been a Saxon chieftain and the other is Fallows Mere, which means a dark pool. These meanings prove that Falmer Pond existed during the Saxon times.
After the Norman Conquest, the land belonged to the estate of Lewes Priory. Falmer has a large 13th century thatched barn that is hidden from view as it is behind the church. The barn is known as one of the largest medieval barns in Sussex used by the monks of Lewes Priory for storing sheaves of corn.
In 1536, Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries and church estates were given to his subjects who lived at a distance. Falmer was in the hands of Thomas Cromwell and Anne of Cleves for a few years each. By 1630, records show that Falmer was owned by the Craven family of Berkshire.
In the 1700s, the Falmer estate was bought by the Pelham family. Thomas Pelham, Earl of Chichester, created compact farms of 500 to 1000 acres each. The Chichester family founded the Falmer Almshouses and rebuilt the church in 1817.
The decline in the downland estates began in the 1880s and the Chichester family sold off large amounts of the land after 1910. What was left of the estate was requisitioned by the War Department in 1942.
The Chichester family did not return after the war. Instead, they sold most of their remaining estate in 1947 to Brighton Corporation. A teacher training college was then developed in the early 1950s and this is now part of Brighton University. Sussex University was built in 1961. In the 1990s, Brighton Polytechnic Falmer campus the home of the University of Brighton. Falmer also lends its name to the University of Sussex’s alumni magazine.
At a local level, Falmer is governed by Falmer Parish Council. The next level of government is the district council. The parish of Falmer is within the Kingston ward of Lewes District Council. East Sussex County Council is the next tier of government wherein Falmer is within the Newhaven and Ouse Valley West division.
The UK Parliament constituency for Falmer is Lewes. At European level, Falmer is represented by the South-East region, which holds ten seats in the European Parliament.
As for sports, Lewes Priory Cricket Club play some home games in Falmer. It has Sussex and Brighton universities students and staff as members. The village is also the site of Falmer Stadium, home of Brighton & Hove Albion F.C. The 30,500-seater stadium opened in July 2011.
